February 2024 President’s Letter

The snow is falling, clinics are cancelled, staff is scrambling to call patients for reappointments, and coordinators are rebooking research participants due to the storm. . .but the snow is a spectacular sight, just fallen and deep. A break in the usual hectic pace offers that moment to reflect.

We’re busy with Society issues, but looking forward to the annual meeting in Chicago in May. A record number of abstracts have been submitted for presentation at the meeting, the Discovery program is robust, and things continue to shape up for an exciting gathering. The continued commitment of both researchers and the clinically engaged members of the society is evident. The awards committee was impressed with the high quality of the grant applications for the Research Fellowship, Clinical Scholar, and EDI awards. The committees are busy at all levels.

This month I am highlighting the Publications Committee, headed by Colin Hawkes, at Cork University in Ireland.

Colin Hawkes

One of the major functions of the Publications Committee is serving as the Society’s liaison with Hormone Research in Paediatrics, our Society-sponsored journal. The committee is engaged with the management of the society’s member composition of the journal’s Editorial Board. Colin and Stefano Cianfarani, the Editor-in-Chief, have recently formalized a policy for appointments to the board, emphasizing the involvement of younger members in this role.  The Publications Committee will initiate a call for interested participants at the annual meeting. Thanks to Colin and the committee for this important work.

NIH supporting Child Care Costs:

  • DID you KNOW: An NIH policy provides up to $2,500 in childcare cost support to full-time National Research Service Award (NRSA) fellows and trainees. In fact, childcare support was approved for nearly every researcher awarded an NRSA fellowship who requested support. The total number of childcare awards rose from 231 in FY 2021 to 331 in FY 2023, and the percentage of fellows that received this support rose from 5.6% to 8.4% over this time.

Pediatrics Supplement: A Workforce Projection Model

This month’s Pediatrics Supplement presents a workforce projection model that estimates the future supply of pediatric subspecialists from 2020-2040.  Current trends for the pediatric endocrinology workforce in the US show that it is struggling to sustain an adequate, let alone optimal, workforce capacity. The article reviews the current state of the workforce and presents projected headcount and clinical workforce equivalents at the national, census region, and census division level on the basis of a subspecialty workforce supply model through 2040. It concludes by discussing the educational and training, clinical practice, policy, and future workforce research implications of the data presented.

Those who cannot access the journal can go to: https://www.abp.org/content/projecting-future-us-pediatric-subspecialty-workforce where there is a 4 min overview video as well as a link to the paper.

EDI Spotlight: The Articles of Confederation

Authored by: Ambika Ashraf and Ilene Fennoy

The Articles of Confederation, ratified by all thirteen states on March 1, 1781, marked a seminal moment in American history, serving as the United States’ first constitution. Although the Articles themselves were replaced by the current U.S. Constitution in 1789, they have had a lasting influence on the political landscape of today in several key areas of American political thought, governance, and federal-state relations.
